Material for Week 2

FOR MONDAY

1. McKee, through p. 11 of the PDF

McKee-1.pdf

2. SIN NOMBRE, to p. 50

Sin Nombre - Eng Vers.pdf

FOR WEDNESDAY

1. Finish the script of SIN NOMBRE

2. Try to identify a beat, or a couple beats--what do you think it is? (We will talk more about this later.)

3. Can you identify one sequence of scenes? Can you explain how they work in sequence, similar to McKee's example of the "Woman from Terre Haute"?

4. Find an instance where McKee's "True Character" shows itself in one moment, in one character. Refer to McKee's example of the surgeon and the house cleaner in the reading.

FOR FRIDAY

1. Watch the film of SIN NOMBRE on your own and be prepared to discuss the relevance of the McKee readings.

2. Finish McKee-1. Make sure you understand what he means by “rhetoric”, “structure”, “meaning”, “idea”, and “counter” idea, and “story values.”

**

Notes for class:

Discuss transition from Acts 1 and 2 and the change of direction this presents us with.

Esp. in terms of the function of structure,

“to provide progressively building pressures that present more difficult dilemmas where they must make more and more difficult risk-taking choices and actions, gradually revealing their true natures, even down to the unconscious self.”

What is McKee’s concept of “True Character”? How can we see it in this screenplay? Do we feel we agree with him, that we can see this concept at work here?

Groups to begin analyzing the script for “arcs or changes” in the “inner nature” of the protagonist OR other main characters.
